Yoshuko, Canvas and Blackboard

Three platforms, one question: what changes for your students this term?

Side by side

The rows a department decides on — including the ones we lose.

Canvas and Blackboard sell on contracts with each institution and publish no list price, so no price is claimed for either. Statements about Canvas and Blackboard last reviewed August 2026.

Where Canvas and Blackboard are still ahead, or level

If any of these decides it for you, they should. Better you read it here than find it in a pilot.

Both

Single sign-on and student records

Canvas and Blackboard connect to your single sign-on (SSO, SAML) and your student records system (SIS). Yoshuko does neither, so accounts and course places are managed in Yoshuko. That is fine for a department and a real cost across a whole institution.

Both

LTI tools from other companies

Two decades of LTI tools plug into Canvas and Blackboard. Yoshuko has no LTI support, so a tool you already licence will not appear inside a Yoshuko course.

Both

Watching exams from a distance (proctoring)

There are no online exams watched by a person here, and no partners who do it. If a programme depends on exams watched that way, that stays where it is.

Blackboard

Copied work checking at no extra cost

SafeAssign ships with Blackboard. Ours is included too — this is a row we draw, not one we win.

Canvas

Range, and a large community

Canvas does more things than Yoshuko does, and there is an answer online for most of them. A newer platform cannot claim that and should not pretend to.

Why a college or a training team moves anyway

Eight arguments, each one a thing the platform already does.

Comments arrive while they can still change the grade

Written work is marked against the teacher's own rubric within hours, not at the end of two weeks of marking. Fast comments are the most widely agreed way to raise achievement, and a pile of work waiting to be marked takes them away.

You see a student falling behind in week three, not in the results

Progress and drop-off are tracked per cohort inside a course, so a teacher can act while there is still term left. How many students complete the course, and how many graduate, is decided in week three, not in the results.

Attendance stops costing five minutes of every lesson

Learners hold up a printed badge or the code in their app and the register fills itself as the class arrives. Across a timetable that is teaching time returned, and the data is good enough to act on.

Honest work without a second contract

Checks for AI-written and copied work run on every marked answer, with the level set per course. Elsewhere this is a separate product, a separate purchase and a separate contract to sign again each year.

Paper still works

Students photograph pages written by hand and the typed-up text is graded like any other answer. Nothing else in this category does that, and it matters wherever mathematics, science or exam practice is still done on paper.

Bring the courses you already have

Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace, Schoology and Moodle archives import directly — units, pages, quiz questions and answer keys. The reason departments stay where they are is the cost of moving, and that is the cost this removes.

And leave with them

Every course exports to Common Cartridge 1.3 or SCORM 1.2 whenever you want it. A platform that is easy to leave is one you can adopt on the strength of a term, rather than on the strength of a five-year forecast.

One department can sign off on it

Published prices and no long set-up project mean a single department can run a real term and report a real result. That is a change somebody inside the institution can put their name to — and stop, cheaply, if it does not work.

Start with one department

  1. Export one course Take it out of Canvas or Blackboard as Common Cartridge and import it here. Units, pages, quiz questions and answer keys come across.
  2. Run one term Teachers mark against their own rubrics; the AI does the first pass and they change whatever they disagree with.
  3. Compare the results Set it beside the department next door — how fast work is marked, attendance, drop-off. Then decide.

Nothing is locked in. Every course exports back out to Common Cartridge or SCORM whenever you want it.

Give the marking back to your teachers.

Published prices, no long set-up project, and your courses export whenever you want them.
